Paul Inglis Media :: Photographic Equipment
Whilst in pursuit of photographically capturing the Manx Wildlife, Natural History Photographer Paul Inglis has observed his subjects evolving. Therefore in order to stay abreast he too has to develop and adapt. As he does, so does his gear.
Having evolved from ‘Manual Focus’ to ‘Auto Focus’, ‘Film’ to ‘Digital’ has all allowed Paul greater freedom photographically enabling him to constantly produce high quality images. Even since he has switched to digital he has switched from shooting ‘JPEG’ to ‘RAW’ to allow him greater control over his images.
All of his equipment is slowly evolving and each item below has been chosen for a specific purpose. He has careful selected every item to ensure it fits his own criteria. Paul feels that every item has to withstand the rigors of the environment that he uses it in. Also it must integrate seamlessly with his existing system and must be easy to use. As most shots are of a fleeting moment, Paul doesn't want equipment that is fiddly or one that lets him down when he needs it most. Therefore he pays attention to every detail when choosing new gear.
Before even attempting to take a new piece of kit into the field Paul thoroughly tests it so he knows exactly how every piece fits, works, reacts, so that he can do it without even thinking about it when he does finally take it into the field. It becomes an extension of him. This allows him to solely concentrate on making the image apposed to thinking where is this or that or how do I set this and in the process missing some great shots.
Paul has been trying to find the best way to carry his gear in the field for years and has owned numerous bags but has never been happy until now! He has finally found a bag that isn’t over engineered yet sturdy enough to take exactly what he wants! He has two bags that MP-1 and the MP-3 they are identical in every way except for the dimensions. The MP-1 will take the 600mm with a pro body attached while the MP-3 takes the 200-400mm with a pro body attached. Both bags will take an additional 4 lenses, a spare body plus numerous other accessories.

Tripods, Heads and Support
General and Telephoto Set-Up
The Gitzo G1548 Series 5 Mountaineer Super Studex Photo is Paul's mainstay
tripod. Since adding the Gitzo GS5120LVL Levelling Base he has never taken
it off, because it has simply allowed him to quickly level the head and begin
shooting 75% faster than what was previously possible. For long lens work
such as with the Nikon 200-400mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor or the Nikon 600mm f/4DED-IF AF-S II Nikkor,
Paul prefers using the full blown Wimberley Gimbal V2. If he is using any
of his other lenses then his preference is for the Kirk BH-1 Ball Head and the
Snap collar which prevents a large lens bashing him on the head whilst carrying
it. He will attach the Wimberley Sidekick to the Kirk BH-1 Ball Head for
use with either the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor or the Nikon 200-400mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S VR
Zoom-Nikkor. However the Sidekick will not take the large super telephoto
(Nikon 600mm f/4DED-IF AF-S II Nikkor).

Macro Set-Up
For macro work Paul prefers to use a lighter set-up and has been very
happy with the Gitzo GT1540 Series 1 Carbon 6x Mountaineer with G-Lock coupled
with a Kirk BH-3 Ball Head.

Beanbags
It is not always practical to use a tripod and in these instances Paul turns
to his beanbags. These are great for supporting his all of his lenses
including the super telephoto. He prefers the lined version where he can
fill them up with rice.

- 1.5kg Double Bean Bag

Gebe Extreme Card Safe
Each Gebe Extreme Card Safe carries up to four memory cards and provides optimal protection while in the field. The design and special materials used; protect the cards from shocks and keeps them securely in place.
Paul prefers to carry a few Card Safe's loaded with 2GB & 4GB than one
loaded with four 16GB cards. The simple reason being is if one Safe when
astray , is damaged or a card became corrupted then all is not lost! As he
shoots Paul backs up his images onto the Epson P-5000 providing him with two
copies of his images until he can download them when back in the office.

always accompany him in the field.
